Watershed Assessment
Home > Managing A Watershed > Assessing Water Quality > Watershed Assessment
Watershed characterizations and assessments identify environmental problems in a watershed, understand their causes, and select appropriate solutions to those problems. Some of the data analyzed in this process covers information about land use, geology, soils, critical habitats, population changes, and water quality. The analysis is then integrated into recommendations for watershed management tools to restore, enhance, or protect water quality.
The Millstone Watershed is part of the 1,100 square mile Raritan River Basin and the large size of both the Raritan River Basin and the Millstone Watershed, prompted the Association to provide a quicker link from characterization and assessment of natural conditions to the implementation of projects that can restore and enhance the natural environment. Smaller regions of the Millstone Watershed, in the 10 - 50 square mile range, are ideal areas for characterization and assessment.
The goals of this project include improving water quality; educating local residents, businesses, and municipalities on nonpoint-source pollution reductions; and measurable reductions in this type of pollution.
We have completed the Characterization and Assessment of four subwatersheds -
We are currently working on two more subwatersheds, Duck Pond Run and Heathcote Brook.
Please click on the map or any of the above links for more information on any of these subwatersheds - or the text and executive summaries of all the assessments are available in our library. If you are interested in the maps from the assessments please contact our staff.
